Start tomato seeds in a good potting mix six weeks before your last spring frost date. Dampen soil before sowing seeds. Plant 1/4″ deep in flats or individual pots. Keep evenly moist while germinating and starting small seedlings, but not wet. In warm areas with a long season, tomatoes can be direct seeded. Sow when all danger of frost has passed and soil temperature is 50º or more. Plant 1/4″ to 3/4″ deep, 3′ to 4′ apart in rows 4′ to 5′ apart. Plants may be closer with support or cages. Harden off seedlings before transplanting with brief exposure when the weather is warm and calm. Transplant when soil temperatures exceeds 60º and no frost is expected.
