Winter wheat can provide most of the cover crop benefits of other cereal crops, as well as a grazing option prior to spring tiller elongation. It’s less likely than barley or rye to become a weed and is easier to kill. Wheat also is slower to mature than some cereals, so there is no rush to kill it early in spring and risk compacting soil in wet conditions. Description

Willow Creek Winter Wheat is a winter annual grain commonly planted for forage production. Willow Creek is a late-maturing variety of winter wheat, which results in an extended period of vegetative growth in the spring that is correlated with higher forage quality. Willow Creek is relatively drought tolerant and can be used in dryland applications or on lighter soils. Winter wheat cover crops are designed to lessen erosion from runoff of water and wind and to retain the soil. They also contribute to the reduction of mineral leaching and compaction, suppress the amount of weed growth, reduce insect pests and diseases, and increase crop yield.
