Beet – Detroit Dark Red
50-60 Days to maturity 10-12 Days to sprout Beet seeds per packet: About 400 Beet seeds per Oz: About 1,500 Beet seeds per Lb: About 25,000 Plant 3/4″-1″ deep, in rows 24″-36″ apart, thinning to 6″-9″ apart once the seeds sprout. Packet will sow 20 ft. Soil: should be rich, deeply plowed, preferably heavy loam. Plant as early in the spring as possible (beets will stand light frosts) or may be started in hotbed and transplanted for extra early. For a continuous harvest, plant at 3-week intervals to Aug. 1.

This is an excellent beet for early planting, and can be relied upon to give excellent results as it is of fine quality and dark red color and all such beets are very good. Turnip shaped with small tops and small tap roots. Market gardeners will be well pleased if they plant heavily of these.” (Page 4, Burrell Seed Catalog 1902) An heirloom dating from over ten years before our company was born, this standard variety for shippers, truckers and canners, is the standard image for red beets. Strong tops suited to mechanical harvesting. Roots nearly globular, smooth, ox-blood red, uniform, with small tap root.
