Description
Common vetch (Vicia sativa) is a winter-growing annual legume known for its high feed value and versatility. It is commonly used as a cover crop, green manure, and forage due to its palatability at all growth stages, from early green shoots to dry matter and seeds and commonly used as a disease break in cereal cropping rotations. Common vetch is also valued for its ability to improve soil health and produces 2-3 tons of dry matter per acre when grown alone, and fixes 50-110 pounds of nitrogen per acre. The most vigorous of the vetches, with excellent green-matter production early in the season. Common Vetch grows larger than Hairy Vetch, and is a valuable forage crop and beneficial insect attractant. If supported by a companion plant, it can reach 3-5 feet, otherwise expect growth to 22 inches.
