Echinacea – Purple Coneflower

(Purple Cone Flower) (P – 24 to 36 in.) Echinacea or Purple Coneflower can be found in open woods, thickets and prairies in the central and eastern U.S. It produces large, rose-purple flowers with prickly, dome-shaped centers, giving it the alternate common name of Hedgehog Coneflower. This classic flower is probably the most popular native wildflower out there, and no native prairie planting or garden is complete without it. This wildflower favorite has it all – it’s showy, it’s native, and it is widely used as an herbal remedy. Plants are easy to grow and long-blooming. Will tolerate a combination of heat and humidity. Daisy-like purple heads up to 6 inches in diameter. Likes rich sandy-loam soil. Good for cut flower arrangements.
