Cabbage is one of the most important of the garden crops and should always receive careful attention. The first thing necessary is good seed, as without this failure is sure. The soil should be deep and rich. For early crop grow plants in hot beds, transplanting to cold frames and then as early as possible after danger of freezing to the open ground. Cultivate often and keep well watered. For late crop sow seed in open ground and transplant, or some succeed finely by sowing seeds in hills where wanted and thinning to one. Because cabbage is hardy, it can withstand heavy frost and temperatures as low as 15 to 20° F. That means it can be grown in both spring or fall. That said, this cabbage is not a “beginner” crop as it can’t bear hot temperatures so you generally need to seed inside for early spring transplants.
