Description
Alfalfa can be used as a good cover crop between main crops. If used as a cover crop, you need to take into account that alfalfa is a great soil builder, a good source of N, an effective subsoiler and an erosion preventer. However, alfalfa is neither a very good N scavenger, nor is it a competitor against weeds. Alfalfa is a deep rooted and moderately long-lived perennial. One of the most widely used legumes for hay production. Also found in pasture, range and revegetation mixes. Some varieties exhibit spreading ability that is suitable for grazing.
Spring seeding date: Mid April-May. Fall seeding date: August-Sept. – Autotoxicity Warning: Never reseed directly into a field where alfalfa stand was that same season. Existing alfalfa plants release toxins that kill off new seedlings.
