Millet – Golden German

Description

Foxtail millet is a rapid growing annual cover crop but matures early, which limits its yield potential to less than pearl millet or sorghum-sudangrass. The forage cures rapidly after swathing due to its naturally fine stems, making it very easy to put up as dry hay. It has poor regrowth making it best suited as a one cut, short term hay crop, but its strong stalk and close broad leaves allow this variety to resist lodging and windblow. Avoid giving to horses, since it can cause joint issues for them, however for most livestock it is not an issue.

Very popular as a bird attractor, foxtail (or formally German Golden Foxtail) millet is found as a base in many bird feeds especially for its low grow back issues due to being mostly male plants. Toasted millet seed is also a popular snack in many tropical parts of the world, besides making a porridge similar to oatmeal in places where oats do not do as well.
