Turkey wheat is a heritage grain, meaning that it predates modern breeding. Turkey Red arrived in the US in the early 1870’s, brought to Kansas by Mennonite immigrants from Eastern Europe. Popular until the mid 1940s, Turkey Red is higher protein than many modern varieties. Winter wheat cover crops are designed to lessen erosion from runoff of water and wind and to retain the soil. They also contribute to the reduction of mineral leaching and compaction, suppress the amount of weed growth, reduce insect pests and diseases, and increase crop yield.
Cover Crops are sold in pound bags.
