Artichoke – Green Globe

Plant 4 to 5 artichoke seeds in a 4″ or larger pot in January. Thin seedlings, leaving the strongest one to grow. Plants should be 8″ to 10″ tall when moved outside when soil temperature reaches 60º. Space plants 4 to 5 feet apart, as the plants get quite large. Artichokes prefer well drained, loamy soil and plenty of water. They benefit from periodic feedings and a  3″ to 4″ layer of mulch.

A perennial requiring long season. Can be started indoors and transplanted to the field in the spring and harvested in the fall. Heads (buds) are 3 to 4 inches in diameter, blunt cone-shaped and deep in green color. Plants 3-5 feet tall. Needs fertile soil. Space plants 36 inches x 36 inches apart for best results.

Packet contains about 4 grams of seed. All orders include a handling fee, however orders with only “free shipping” items will have no further charges. Plus shipping items will include postage depending on size of the order.

Artichoke is a warm weather perennial, so in most of the US it will need to be in potted plants or started 6-8 weeks before last frost. These plants do take quite a bit of space, so transplant to a large pot or corners of the garden with plenty of space.
